Starmer’s ultimatum to Israel: Stop the war or UK will recognize a Palestinian state

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced Tuesday that he would join France in recognizing a Palestinian state at the U.N. Security Council in September if Israel does not end the war in Gaza.

If the U.K. makes this move, it would be the second G7 country after France to formally recognize a Palestinian state.

Although such recognition is only symbolic and has little real-world application, the goal behind the move would be to further alienate Israel diplomatically.

Around 250 MPs, including those from Starmer’s Labour Party, signed a letter urging the prime minister to push for a two-state solution amid international media allegations of starvation in Gaza.

In an address to the British public, Starmer said, “I’ve always said that we will recognize a Palestinian state as a contribution to a proper peace process at the moment of maximum impact for the two-state solution. With that solution now under threat, this is the moment to act.”

At UN ‘two-state solution’ event, France demands Israel pay $2 billion to Palestinians.

The French minister threatened Israel with punitive measures via the European Commission, which is discussing possible actions this week.

Monday’s United Nations conference on the subject of a two-state solution offers “a rare and indispensable opportunity” that “can and must serve as a decisive turning point,” António Guterres, the U.N. secretary-general, said at the opening of the two-day event.

Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud, the Saudi foreign minister whose county was one of the event co-hosts, told attendees that the kingdom’s view has “always been” that Fatah, the Palestinian Authority and the Palestine Liberation Organization “are the only legitimate representative of the Palestinian people.”

“That continues to be the case,” the Saudi diplomat said.

France, which has said that it will recognize a Palestinian state during the U.N. General Assembly in September, also co-hosted the conference.

U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee slammed France’s push to recognize a Palestinian state, accusing President Macron of doing nothing to help Gazans escape the war zone and warning that such recognition would hand Hamas a major victory while emboldening other terror groups.

Israel repeats threat to ‘open gates of hell’ on Hamas

Defense Minister Israel Katz promised severe consequences for Hamas should it continue holding kidnapped Israelis as hostages, amid reports that ceasefire talks between Jerusalem and the terror group are faltering.

“If Hamas does not release the hostages, the Gates of Hell will open on Gaza,” Katz said at a ceremony in the central Israeli city of Holon on Sunday evening.

“Beyond what we are already doing with great force, we will do much more. We will protect the hostages and strike everything connected to Hamas until they are released. We will do whatever it takes,” he added.

Katz’s threat is not the first time Israeli leaders have warned of unleashing “hell” on the Gaza-based terror group.

During a March ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, Katz made a near-identical threat, warning the terror group to respect the terms of the truce.

“Make no mistake, Hamas — this is just the beginning. If Hamas does not release the hostages soon, the gates of Gaza will close, and the gates of hell will open,” Katz said at the time.
