Canada ‘rewarding Hamas’ with Palestinian state recognition
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Wednesday that Canada will officially recognize a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly in September, following similar moves by the United Kingdom and France.
“Canada has long been committed to a two-state solution, an independent, viable and sovereign Palestinian state living side by side with the State of Israel in peace and security,” Carney said during a press conference.
The prime minister added that Canada “condemns the fact that the Israeli government has allowed a catastrophe to unfold in Gaza,” and said the decision was made “because the Palestinian Authority has committed to lead much-needed reform.”
However, the Palestinian Authority (PA) has refused to end its pay-for-slay program, which provides financial rewards to terrorists convicted of murdering Israelis, along with payments to their families.
Carney also claimed that PA President Mahmoud Abbas pledged to hold long-overdue elections—an indication, he said, that the Palestinian leadership is embracing democracy.
Abbas, who has served as PA president since 2006, was initially elected to a four-year term but has repeatedly canceled elections over the past 16 years. Widely unpopular among Palestinians, Abbas remains in power without a democratic mandate.
Germany demands progress on Palestinian statehood as Portugal set to recognize Palestinian state.

Portugal has decided to recognize unilateral Palestinian statehood in September, the country’s foreign minister announced Thursday, while Germany is demanding progress toward the establishment of a Palestinian state.
Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel told the SIC news site that his country will recognize unilateral Palestinian statehood in September, alongside at least 14 other countries, including France, the UK, and Canada.
“This was agreed upon by all of us. President Macron doesn’t decide alone, and we follow suit,” Rangel said. “It’s a matter we’re deciding together. ”
Germany, which has thus far declined to back unilateral Palestinian statehood, called for progress toward the establishment of a Palestinian state while warning against “unilateral steps,” without specifying whether this comment was directed at Ramallah’s bid for recognition or Israeli plans to apply sovereignty in Judea and Samaria.
“Germany will continue to advocate that Hamas finally sets free the hostages, which include German nationals, is disarmed and no longer exerts political influence in the Palestinian territories,” German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said before departing for Israel on Thursday.
